Everything Dog 9/4/16- Italy Earthquake, Twin Pups & National Dog Day

Welcome to Woof’s first weekly round up! We’re not so narcissistic as to believe that we’re the only ones with good content on our site (we can still be bias though and think we’re the best, of course).

Every week we will bring you a review of the best of the rest- our favorite content from other dog blogs and websites worth mentioning. Enjoy!

The Argus Collar is one of the most fashionable collars out there. It’s not like any other collar though, it comes with a matching bracelet to symbolize the love between you and your best friend. Some may think it’s over the top, but I love the idea.

Mailman Befriends Dog

We caught wind of a mailman and a dog going viral, breaking all kinds of stereotypes in the meantime.

The dog’s human, Michael Collins shared this video he had taken praising the mailman who stops to greet the dog every day, regardless of whether the family has any mail.  Collins says, “He always gets overlooked as a dangerous or unapproachable dog, but this guy here always makes an effort to get off his bike to give him a hug and a pat!”

Rescue Dog Who Falls in Love With His Premature Baby Sister

Some pairs are just meant to be- and it certainly seems Addie and Jpeg are one of them. Addie was a baby born premature, who required an 8 month stay in the hospital before going home. Jpeg, now  a gentle giant adopted by the Durfee family from a pregnant dog rescue at the age of 3 months, fell in love with Addie before she even arrived home from the hospital.

“When she was in the NICU, I would bring home her blanket that she was swaddled in that day, and he would get excited, smell it and sleep on it” says mom, Stephanie.

Even though Jpeg is still a young pup, he has calmed down tremendously since they brought baby Addie home, and mom Stephanie says “he is nothing but gentle with her.” Baby Addie still has multiple issues facing her- including a possible diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy, developmental delays,  and feeding tube requirement, but she is doing excellent- all things considered. Jpeg is even a stand-in at some of her therapy sessions, encouraging her to crawl and develop lower body strength. Click here for the full story.

Idaho Water Park Opens Doors to Dogs this Week

As a final summer hoorah, the Lakeview Water Park in Idaho opens its gates for the pooches! Every year on the last day of their summer season, dogs are welcome to come swimming. Check out the pics of these dogs making a big splash.

Doggy DNA Testing

Wonder where Fido gets his good looks? Where Roofus gets that soft coat? Where Angel gets her desire to dig hole after hole in the back yard? Look no further than a dog DNA test. You can now send in a saliva sample from the comfort of your own home, to a company who will then send you back a break down of your dogs genetic make-up. Most of the tests are reasonably priced, costing somewhere between $60-$100. Not all tests are made equal however- one should do some research on the reliability of the company, and how many breeds are included in the company’s database (the higher the number of breeds included in the database, the more accurate the testing will be).

Pet WebMD gives a good overview of the subject and different considerations that should be made before selecting a test. As neat as this new technology is, I do hope it is used for the sake of owner curiosity, rather than utilized for the sake of breed discrimination. What I don’t want is a letter from my landlord asking for a breakdown of my dog’s heritage, coupled with an eviction notice if he were to contain a percentage of say Pit Bull, Shepard or something to that effect.

Dog Mugs

How are we just discovering these? What a pain it is to go out on a hike, or into the city carrying around a doggy bag with bottles of water and a clunker dog bowl. No more!
Meet the Dog Mug

Squeeze the bottle, and water squirts up the the bowl shaped lid. You can by from High Wave, or search for various models on Amazon. The product retails for ~ $20-25.

World’s First Identical Twin Puppies Born

What’s better than one puppy? TWO! For the first time in history, a set of identical puppies has been born. Cullen and Romulus born in South Africa, are confirmed monozygotic twins. This may not be the first case, but never has a case been reported and backed up by DNA analysis. The veterinarian who delivered the fraternal twin puppies via c-section, was stunned to find that the pups shared the same placenta. Scientists who obtained blood samples confirmed the pups were genetically identical shortly thereafter. The two Irish Wolfhounds are alive and well according to reports. Here is the full story.

 Lavish Doggy Birthday Parties

I’m finishing up this section now, since Romeo is asleep napping in the corner. I don’t dare let him catch this part- he may start getting ideas.

We all love our dogs. Some of us get a little crazier than others. Crazy enough to spend ten grand- yes $10,000- on our dogs birthday parties. If I wasn’t saddled with student loan debt, I may be one of these people too. Maybe in my next life, I’ll be a dog party planner. See for yourself.

Celebration of National Dog Day

Personally, I think every day should be dog day. These awesome creatures just bring so much joy and excitement to our lives! Check out these sayings and photos celebrating man’s best friend.

“What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight; it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”—Dwight D. Eisenhower

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.” ― Josh Billings

“You can usually tell that a man is good if he has a dog who loves him.” ― W. Bruce Cameron

Nine days after Italy Earthquake, Dog Pulled from Ruins- Alive

In our favorite story of the week, a pup named Romeo was pulled from the ruins of Italy, nine days after the deadly 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck. The best part- he was discovered alive and well. It appears his saving grace were a few beams that fell in just the right direction, holding up the rubble above him and creating a space that he was able to survive in. There must have been a water pipe leaking, or some other source of water that allowed the dog to sustain himself. During a time of so much mayhem and sadness, this story really brings smiles to otherwise solemn faces. We are so happy for Romeo and his family.

Kudos to the amazing rescuers who saved this dog.

  1. Thanks for your posting. I also believe that laptop computers have become more and more popular currently, and now are usually the only kind of computer utilized in a household. Simply because at the same time that they are becoming more and more reasonably priced, their computing power keeps growing to the point where these are as powerful as desktop computers from just a few in years past.

  2. I simply want to mention I’m newbie to blogging and site-building and seriously enjoyed this web blog. Probably I’m likely to bookmark your blog . You amazingly come with impressive articles. Regards for sharing your web page.

  3. Hi there would you mind stating which blog platform you’re

    • Thank you! 🙂 I have a WordPress theme. The benefit of WordPress is that they are free of course, and there are so many different Plugins that can be used and therefore very easy to personalize your site. You are not limited to any one format. If you are seriously looking to start up a blog, I highly recommend Problogger- it’s a wonderful site with a ton of free content that will get you going.
